We all know flossing is an essential part of taking care of our teeth and gums, but according to some studies, nearly a third of people never floss their teeth at all. Even if you are a diligent brusher who brushes at least twice a day, you are not hitting all the areas of your mouth if you don’t floss. A toothbrush just cannot reach the nooks and crannies between your teeth.
Don’t skip this all-important task in protecting your oral health. Floss at least once a day!
Here are some handy tips your Poway dentist recommends as far as proper flossing technique.
Tips for Flossing Like a Pro
Food particles that stuck between teeth and below the gumline will contribute to plaque buildup if they are not removed regularly. You can’t reach all the spaces in your mouth with a toothbrush; flossing is the only way to reach those tight spots. Flossing will take just a minute or two out of your day, but it goes a long way toward protecting your oral health.
Flossing is easy: Take a length of floss that is about 18 inches long and wind it around each middle finger. Leave a space of space of floss to work with. Hold the floss tightly as you work it up and down the areas between your teeth. Gently hit the bottom area of the tooth below the gumline. Work your way around your entire mouth, using a fresh portion of floss as you move to each tooth.
The Correct Type of Dental Floss
The correct type of floss is whatever you find easier and are more apt to use on a regular basis. Nylon floss comes in a variety of flavors and is waxed or unwaxed. If your teeth have tight spaces, you can try PTFE floss, which is less apt to shred.
Either floss works great—but you have to use it regularly!
