Amalgam Fillings versus Composite Fillings
Amalgam fillings are also called silver fillings, but that name is somewhat misleading. Mercury is actually one of the primary components of amalgam fillings. Studies have shown that the mercury used in amalgam fillings is safe, and no adverse health effects have been linked to the mercury found in amalgam fillings. Despite this, many people understandably feel uncomfortable about having even tiny amounts of mercury in their mouths or in their children's mouths. Some people have chosen to have their old amalgam fillings removed and replaced with composite fillings.
